Black Templars have a lot of different units to choose from. When starting a Black Templar army, this variety can be quite confusing to say the least. This is my own personal analasys of the various units available to a Black Templar general, based on 3rd edition rules and the 3rd edition Codex: Space Marines. Please bare in mind that the 4th edition will influence each unit in a different way, as will the new Codex: Space Marines, both coming along later this year. And, as always, they reflect my own view on Black Templars, which might not be your own view or may not fit your gaming style.
