Tactica Black Templars
1500 points sample army list

HQ

Brother Ardanwen
Emperor's Champion (105 points)

The Emperor's Champion is a compulsory choice for Black Templars. With this list he joins a large squad that rides in a crusader.

Brother Chaplain Garian
Chaplain with bolt pistol, jump pack, frag grenades and auspex (94 points)

A chaplain is always a good HQ choice with his rosarius and crocius arcanum. This one got a jump pack to join a squad of assault marines plus some extra equippement

Elites

Iridian
Dreadnought with heavy flamer, plasma cannon, extra armour and smoke launchers (133 points)

Many people don't like dreadnoughts, but I just love them. They are a very flexible unit on the battlefield and can fullfill almost every role you assign to them. The plasma cannon is a great against highly armoured troops and open toped vehicles like Ork trukks or Dark Eldar raiders and it can't overheat when mounted on a vehicle.

Troops

Black Templar Squad I
10 paladins and 4 neophytes with close combat weapons and one power weapon (204 points

Large close combat squads are one of the Black Templars advantages. These ride in a crusader together with the emperor's champion. They are large enough to take on most opponents on their own.
In case you were wondering: Squads don't get named in my Black Templars army as they don't have sergeants. Instead every single model is named.

Black Templar Squad II
8 paladins and 2 neophytes with close combat weapons and one power fist (157 points)
Rhino transport with extra armour, dozer blade and smoke launchers (63 points)

Another close combat squad to support either the squad I or the assault squad in close combat or take on smaller targets on their own. Many people will not include neophytes in their squads, but to me they are an essential part of Black Templars. Dropping them might be more effective tactically, but it would sacrifice the back ground.

Black Templar Squad III
5 paladins with bolters and a plasma cannon (90 points)
Razorback transport with twinlinked lascannon, extra armour and smoke launchers (98 points)

This is a fire support squad. I like to include a neophyte in these squads, too, but I couldn't spare the points for him in this list. The plasma cannon is a very versatile weapon and the razorback provides some dearly needed anti-tank fire power.

Fast Attack

Black Templars Assualt Squad
5 paladins with jump packs, close combat weapons, storm shields, frag grenades and two power weapons (160 points)

A very expensive but also very fast unit. Joined by the chaplain and equipped with storm shields it takes some time to wrestle these guys down. Against larger enemy units they need support though.
Some people might find this unit too expensive, but they are a very stylish unit when equipped with storm shields that add to the overall feel of the army.

Heavy Support

Land Raider Crusader Vexillus
Land raider crusader with smoke launchers (258 points)

The crusader acts as transport for squad I and the emperor's champion. Land raiders are always a gamble as they can be destroyed by the first shot in the game. Most of the time they will draw a lot of fire though, and the crusader can deal out some serious fire power against infantry himself. And most gamers are still intimidated by the view of a land raider, veterans or newbies, which is a nice bonus.

Predator Ballista
Predator Annihilator with heavy bolter sponsons, extra armour and smoke launchers (138 points)

This predator is flexible fire base that can act against vehicles and infantry alike.

Total points: 1500
Models in army: 40

Basic Tactics

This list has a bit of everything Black Templars offer, making it a versatile and interesting army to play with for both player and opponent. I know that it is possible to create lists that are much more effective and/or competitive. On the other hand this one can still hold its own and I never heard anyone complain about despite of the bad reputation Black Templars have with many gamers.

The set up is pretty simple: I set up the fire support on one or two spots where I can cover most areas on the table. Anti-tank fire power is the weak spot of this army, but I use my vehicles' mobility to make up for it. The close combat units manouvre to gain a favourable position for close combat. Charging headlessly forward seldom works, and it is important to join forces with Black Templars when taking on close combat specialists. Black Templars may be good in close combat, but so are others.
